How do you say 'friend' in Halkomelem? What about "believe"? In this unique printmaking program, students will create original art cards using Halkomelem words based on the artwork of Chilliwack's Bonny Graham-Krulicki, while learning about the nearly extinct Sto:lo language of Halkomelem.

Thirty thousand gold seekers traveled up the Fraser River in 1858 searching for gold. Students will follow the diary of early settlers Charles Evans as he describes his arduous journey (via Panama) from Ontario to BC in 1862. Students investigate occupations during the gold rush, interpret artifacts and taste food popular at the time. Slides illustrate transportation en-route to the gold fields.

Five corners is the business and social centre of Chilliwack and was formed by the intersection of Wellington Avenue, the New Westminster - Yale Wagon Road and Young Road. Students will view a presentation of a flood and fire that changed the community; construct false-front buildings; create newspaper advertisements; and catalogue artifacts related to the business community. Your students gain an understanding of how communities form and some of the factors that can affect change within a community.
