Very little information is known about Sergeant O'Connor, who served with the Second Canadian Infantry Division. During the night of August 12, forward units of the Calgary Highlanders had unknowingly avoided the main German defensive line. Upon entering Le Mesnil at dawn on August 13, they encountered a German aid post that resisted them. The Calgary Highlanders found themselves fighting towards the direction in which they had come in order to defeat the counter‑attack. In doing so, three soldiers were killed and one soldier was wounded.
