Son of Lucien Bowyer and Catherine Pearl Kessler, Chilliwack, B.C.
Originally from Fife Lake, Saskatchewan, Kessler came to Chilliwack with his parents in 1942. He worked for both Cherry Motors in Chilliwack and with a cold storage firm located in New Westminster. Dewart Kessler enlisted in the Canadian Army with the Westminster Regiment and later joined the Seaforth Highlanders and proceeded overseas in May 1943. Kessler's parents received news that their son was wounded in action, with the Calgary Highlanders, on July 25, 1944 during the Battle of Normandy. Kessler recovered from these injuries but was killed in action October 7, 1944. In recognition of his distinguished and gallant service Corporal Kessler was mentioned in despatches, however, no citation for the award is recorded.
