Leonard Nelson was killed May 23, 1944, when serving with the P.P.C.L.I. of the 1st Canadian Infantry Division.

Son of James William and Emma Norris, Chilliwack, B.C.

Flying Officer James Norris was educated at Camp River and Rosedale Public Schools and at Chilliwack High School. He left high school to attend Brisbane Aviation School in Vancouver, but in 1942 decided to join the R.C.A.F. Overseas, he served as a wireless air gunner for two years and returned home in October 1945. On January 19, 1946, the R.C.A.F. Dakota transport in which he was a passenger failed to arrive from a flight between Lethbridge, Alberta and Vancouver, B.C.

On August 19, 1942, Canadian infantry and supporting units landed during the amphibious assault at Dieppe. Taking part in the raid was George Allen Northgraves, who had resided in Chilliwack for two years. Northgraves joined the 16th Anti‑Aircraft Battery in June 1940 and proceeded overseas to England in 1941. On September 14, 1942, his father, Denton Northgraves of McConnell Road, received a cablegram informing him of his son's death.

Son of Norman and Maude Nowell, Yarrow, B.C.

Norville Nowell, grandson of Reuben Nowell, the pioneer farmer and a former Reeve in the district, was born in Chilliwack in 1920. "Norman" and his brother Reuben joined the Canadian Forestry Corps in 1940 and were both posted on active service to Scotland. In 1942, Norman, also known as "Bud", transferred to the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada and served in action throughout Sicily and Italy One of his letters home was published in the Chilliwack Progress and commented, "No mountain climbs for me when I get back home." During the actions of "The Gully" on December 11, 1943, Norman lost his life. Four siblings of Norman Nowell served in the forces including, Reuben, Harrison, Geraldine and George.
